2 – CROCHET HOOK TYPE

There are crochet hooks with handles and without handles & I would strongly recommend not choosing the ones that do not have handles. Those that look just like sticks will provoke hand paint before you get to the middle of your crochet dress.

Of course, it is not equal for everybody, there will always be people who do fine with every crochet hook! What I am sharing here with you is my experience in crocheting clothing.

If you use crochet hooks from 1,5mm to 3,5mm you will not be comfortable crocheting with crochet hooks that look like sticks, you will need that crochet hook to have a handle, so you can finish your crochet skirt before hating the whole crochet concept!

There are different handles. Some are more bouncy and others are more plasticky. From my experience, there is no difference in what kind of material the handle is made from, it is comfortable to crochet for a long time. I noticed however that handles made from wood were not comfortable enough for me.

These are the crochet hooks I decided to use because of their comfort for long-time crocheting without pain. Remember this will not cause a higher or lower quality in your final garment, the crochet handle will impact how long you will be able to crochet without the pain in your palm, hand, and fingers.

I started my crochet path with a crochet “stick” hook, and when I changed to handle, it was a bit awkward for me for a bit, but then I started feeling fast improvement!

3 – CROCHET HOOK SIZE

If you are planning to crochet clothing and if in some moment you want to follow my crochet patterns and my tutorials, I highly recommend you buy crochet hooks from 1,5mm to 3,5mm (with 0,25mm step).

My most used crochet hooks are 1,5mm; 1,75mm; 2mm; 2,25mm; 2,5mm; 2,75mm; 3mm; 3,25mm; 3,5mm. It will be 10 crochet hooks.

Why do you need this tiny step of 0,25mm? Is there really a difference?

YES!

There IS!

When you crochet clothes with crochet hooks from 1,5mm to 3,5mm then you will notice that there is a HUGE difference! Stitch count, tension – all these you will be able to control perfectly with these numbers! I will go deeper into explaining, the importance of this, when we will crochet a dress based on a square crochet pattern, and you will NEED to maintain squares to be squares and not stretch to rectangles! It will be important to regulate the right tension for it! Or..if you want to go into fluffy skirts or blouses and instead of adding stitches you might use a bigger number of crochet hook and create a change of tension that will look fluffy and romantic… There are too many examples of it in crochet clothing!

Have you ever worked tirelessly to create a garment that you thought you'd love, only to finish it and find out it does not look remotely like you thought it would on your body?

VERY IMPORTANT THING I

Some crochet hooks come faulty, it does not depend on the brand, or on the type of the crochet hook. To check if the crochet hook is faulty or is right, take a yarn and pass it through the head of the crochet hook. If you feel some tangle, if the crochet hook is not passing easily and gets kind of lightly stuck, do not buy this crochet hook.

If you buy crochet hooks online, as fast as you receive them, pass the yarn in all crochet hooks. If there is something wrong with them, right to the online shop, so they refund you, or send new ones!)

You can check the video at the end of this post on how to pass the yarn in the head of the crochet hook.

The yarn MUST pass smoothly!

VERY IMPORTANT THING II

Do not buy different crochet hooks from different companies at the same time, or even from different lines.

These crochet hooks have different heads and materials, they will produce different count stitches being the same size. You will not be able to use these crochet hooks in their different size to manipulate the tension of the crochet fabric.

It might look like you will just try them out and see what you like more. It is fine. But make sure that you have the same sizes in all the lines and when you are crocheting a garment and changing the crochet hook, you are changing inside the same line of crochet hook in order to maintain stability of the tension of your crochet fabric.

I have crocheted a sample with 2 crochet hooks of the same size – 2mm – and from the same company – Clover – . BUT! Different lines. I got a different outcome. Different stitches count in the same 2mm! just a different line…
